Stand your ground - The Helmet Law Debate

Let me start by saying that I hope that Ben Roethlisberger is able to recover from the injuries from his motorcycle accident. It's never good when a motorcyclist is injured.

On the other side however, all of the State Motorcycle Rights Organizations must be ready for the fallout. The debate for helmet laws will fire up again and will set many of their efforts on their ears.

Just about every news outlet has jumped on the "We got to require helmets" bandwagon. To the uninformed most of the arguments sound very plausible. This could eventually result in many of the laws that in front of our state representatives being defeated and in some cases being completely reveresed in other states.

Our only defense is to work with the organizations who have fought this battle for years and make sure that we offer a sound, logical, non-emotional argument to support our right to choose.

Every state has a MRO. Regardless if it's ABATE, Freedom of Road Riders, or whatever, contact them and find out what you can do to help. Our only defense is our numbers.

To find your MRO you can search on any of the search engines or check the MRO Directory at Bikerwares.

The other choice is to make sure that you voice your opinion to your local newspapers when they run stories that discuss the Helmet Law debate.

Well a new year is upon us and riding season for many of us is just around the corner. It's been a pretty amazing winter here in the midwest with several days being ridable. Matter of fact just yesterday it was in the 70's. Not bad for a mid January day.

There are a few things that you need to remember if you're riding this time of year.

Miler of the Year

As many of you are aware, Bikerwares sponsored a contest to track the miles ridden. Several people participated and some extraordinary miles were put in by you. The contest closed as of December 31, 2005 and the winners were determined.

Prescription motorcycle sunglasses are becoming more widely available, improving in quality and available in a wider choice of styles. All of this is being made available with the special requirements of motorcyclists.

Motorcycle Sunglasses have to meet some special requirements since they are used in extreme conditions. Some of these requirements are that they lenses be made from shatter resistant materials. When riding down the road a normal speeds, even the smallest flying object could result in the lose or damage of an eye. The sunglasses must provide a way to shield the eyes from wind, rain, dust and other elements that could irritate the eyes and decrease visibility. To help protect the eyes from the elements a large number of motorcycle sunglasses offer several different types of foam that help form a better seal around the eye sockets. The lenses of motorcycle sunglasses, should be scratch resistant. Since the lenses will constantly be bombarded by dirt, dust, bugs, hail, sleet, rain and any of 100's of other things, they should have a scratch resistant coating that will help maintain a clear view. Motorcycle sunglasses must provide optically correct vision that doesn't distort the view of the road ahead. Motorcycle sunglasses must be aerodynamic to insure that they stay in place even at high speeds.

Given the requirements above, it's sometime hard to believe that any manufacturer of sunglasses could ever be successful. But companies like Wiley X, Bobster and Global Vision have been able to succeed in producing a line of sunglasses and goggles that meet and often exceed these requirements. In addition Wiley X and Bobster have been able to develop sunglasses and goggles that not only meet those requirements, but also will accept prescriptions.

One of the biggest problems to overcome is based on the requirement for motorcycle sunglasses to be aerodynamic. To meet this requirement most of the sunglasses that have been developed specifically for motorcycle riding and other extreme activities tend to be very curved. The curve in the lenses reduces the amount of corrective grind (prescription) that can be placed in the frame. This means that not all prescription motorcycle sunglasses will be able to handle all prescriptions. Basically, the more curve the sunglasses have, the less of a correction they can handle. Some lenses are even able to have bifocals ground onto the lenses.

As for lenses, the choices for prescription sunglasses is tremendous and can be somewhat pricey. All lenses should be made from shatter resistant polycarbonate plastic. The lens color should be chosen based on the conditions you'll be riding in. For example, if you'll be using your prescription sunglasses mostly at night due to poor night vision, then the lenses should be clear. If you'll be using them mostly in extreme sunlight conditions, then mirrored lenses would be the best choice.

One solution that has proven to be very useful is the use of photochomic (light adjusting/transitional) lenes. These lenses will adjust to the light and temperature and go from almost clear to a dark sunglass tint. One of the nice features about this is that if you have to wear glasses all of the time, these lenses could be used indoors and out, thereby allowing you to have to carry a single pair of glasses.

Buying prescription motorcycle sunglasses can be a very difficult process. The best choice is to find a retailer that understands the requirements for motorcycle sunglasses and can provide you with the information you will need to get from your doctor to fill the prescription. Make sure that the retailer is able to answer all of your questions, provides with an easy way to order and understands riding.

Big Changes at Bikerwares

I'd like to thank everyone who has given me feedback on the site. Without your input the site would be based on my ideas alone, and probably wouldn't work for anyone but me. But with your help, I've been able to incorporate some really good idea.

This last month has been extremely busy. I've been actively make changes to the site to help make it a more user freindly. As with all businesses "Change is the only constant". Bikerwares is no different.

Over the last month changes have been made to the overall design of the shop. These changes should help you navigate the site much easier. Every page now has a common navigation bar on the left side of the page that will help you find what your looking for much easier.

In addition the shopping cart software has been updated to help make the shopping process much easier and quicker. The upgrade also provide better security to any personal information that is gathered on the site.

There have been many new products added to Bikerwares and many of those will make great gifts. Check them all out.

Bikerwares is based on the simple premise that if the customer needs it I will do everything I can to provide it. You determine what Bikerwares is so don't hesitate to let me know what changes you want to see.

2006 Biker Event and Rallay Calendar

I've started updating the Biker Event and Rallay Calendar with the 2006 events. I hope to have the most extensive list of events on the web. If you have a favorite event or rally, send me the information and I'll add it to the calendar. You can check out the calendar at:

Product Review: Wiley X XL-3 LA Light Adjusting with Brushed Gun Metal Frame

Over the last couple of months, I've started riding with XL-3 glasses from Wiley X. They are part of the Magna-Seal series of glasses from Wiley X. The Magna-Seal series is a set of metal frames that have magnetic ultra-foam gasket that is easily removed when not needed. In addition the glasses use the patented T-Peg Docking System that turns these sunglasses into an effective pair of goggles. There are several lens choices, but the lenses are not interchangeable. For that reason I chose the Light Adjusting Lenses.

Overall, I've been really happy with the glasses. The metal frames are light and sturdy. I've not had the opportunity to use them during the summer and leave the frames out in the boiling sun, but I suspect they'll cool very quickly. These glasses have rubber on the temples at the ears to make them more comfortable and help them stay in place better.

The Ultra-foam Gasket is very comfortable and slotted to help air flow around the eyes. Supposedly, it's supposed to help keep the glasses from fogging also, but have found when riding in moist conditions around 40 degrees some fogging still occurs. Even though I did experience some fogging, I've found that happens with all glasses even those with Anti-Fog coatings.

Being able to easily remove the gasket is a really nice feature. When I'm riding I've got the gasket in place and don't have to worry about it. Even at high speeds, I haven't noticed it wanting to come loose or anything. Once I stop and just want to sit around I can easily pop out the gasket and end up with a nice pair of sunglasses that are comfortable and look very cool.

The T-Peg Docking system is extremely nice. It works by attaching an elastic strap with T-pegs attached through special holes in the temples. They attach very securely and I haven't had to worry about them coming loose or snapping out. The elastic strap is adjustable so that you can make it fit very comfortably to you head.

Light Adjusting (Photochromic) lenses have come a long way. For several year I had glasses that had light adjusting lenses. The main problem was that they had to always be made from glass and tended to be very heavy. Well as most of you know, a heavy pair of glass lenses just won't fly when you're riding your motorcycle. First of all glass will shatter if hit by something like a rock of bug. The lenses on these glasses is made from Shatter Resistant Selinite Polycarbonate. This is the same material that bullet-proof glass is made from. While there is no such thing as shatter proof, these lenses meet all of the requirements for safety glasses and the requirements for military frag tests. In other words these are some strong damn lenses.

In addition to having a tendency to shatter, glass lenses tend to be very heavy. This of course can become very uncomfortable if you are wearing the glasses all day. As mentioned before, these lenses are made from polycarbonate which is a very light material. I haven't found the weight of glasses uncomfortable at all.

Lastly, the light adjusting capabilities of these glasses is very good. Light adjusting lenses by their nature won't get as dark as tinted glasses. But I've found that with these glasses, the darkness is good enough to ride even in very bright conditions. When I'm in shaded or even night the lenses lighten very nicely. As a matter of fact these have become my favorite glasses for night riding. The lenses lighten enough for me to be able to see very clearly, but maintain just enough color to help reduce the glare of on-coming lights. VERY NICE. Lastly, the lenses are able to adjust very quickly. If you're going from light to shadow they adjust very quickly so you won't find your self in the shadows with very dark lenses not being able to see.

Over all I like these glasses very much and would recommend them.

Wind Friend or Foe?

With winter coming on us quick I was reading in the book Proficient Motorcycling some last night about riding in the wind. While we all talk about being in the wind, we have to remember that the wind can also cause us problems. Those days when the wind seems to be blowing at a direct 90 degree angle to our direction of travel can really get my attention.

In this book the author (David Hough) talks about the "sails" that are formed by us, our passengers, our bikes and our luggage. He mentions how important it is to understand the sail that you have when in the wind and what effects it will have on your motorcycle.

Remember when we ride in the winter we tend to be out there in more wind than usual. The wind will want to tend to blow us over, so be aware and be careful. After all there will be some great riding coming up with Bikerwares in 2006.

Motorcycles Are Everywhere!

I have long been an active advocate in Motorcycle Rights Organizations. For that reason when I started Bikerwares (http://www.bikerwares.com), I felt that part of the effort should be geared towards helping fight for the rights and safety of bikers. For that reason, Bikerwares has been a corporate sponsor of the Freedom of Road Riders (http://www.forr.net), which is the MRO in Missouri, since the company was started.

Being a corporate sponsor I get a copy (actually several) of the monthly newsletter. This month there was an ad in the classified ads that struck me as a really good idea. The ad said:

Selecting the right Motorcycle Sun Glasses frame for your face.

Proper fit and a style that suits you in motorcycle glasses should be your main objectives. Your face size, shape and other factors should play a major role in your decision. To make the best selection, you need to have a good understanding of what constitutes "proper fit." The fit will affect how your glasses look, whether or not they are comfortable, and how well you see with them. The shape of your frames should work well with the shape of your face.

SQUARE FACE

A square face has a strong jaw line and a broad forehead, plus the width and length are in the same proportions. To make the square face look longer and soften the angles, try narrow frame styles, frames that have more width than depth and narrow ovals. Compliment a square face with frames that are slightly curved. The top of the frames should sit high enough on the face to downplay the jaw line.

ROUND FACE

A round face has curved lines with the width and length in the same proportions and no angles. To make the face appear thinner and longer, try angular narrow eyeglass frames to lengthen the face, a clear bridge that widens the eyes and frames that are wider than they are deep, such as a rectangular shape. To play down the roundness, select frames with straight or angular lines. With a round face, give the illusion of longer, slimmer face, by choosing a frame that is more rectangular in shape and has a clear or thin bridge. Deep color such as black or tortoise also minimizes fullness.

BASE UP TRIANGULAR FACE

This shape is defined by a broad forehead and narrow mouth and chin. Frames with a thin rim and vertical lines will help balance the bottom part of the face. Frames should not sit too high on the face. Avoid large frames, heavy nose bridges, bold colors and square shapes. This face has a very wide top third and small bottom third. To minimize the width of the top of the face, try frames that are wider at the bottom, very light colors and materials, and rimless frame styles.

BASE DOWN TRIANGULAR FACE

This face shape is defined by a heavy jaw line and thinner forehead and chin. To make your face look more proportionate we suggest a frame that is heavily accented on the top region. An example would be semi-rimless frame, with heavy top, and no frame at the bottom. To add width and emphasize the narrow upper third of the face, try frames that are heavily accented with color and detailing on the top half or cat-eye shapes.

OBLONG FACE

The oblong face is longer than it is wide and has a long straight cheek line and sometimes a longish nose. To make the face appear shorter and more balanced, try frames that have a top-to-bottom depth, decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face or a low bridge to shorten the nose. Long narrow faces are similar to square faces in that chin and cheek are of nearly the same width. Facial length, however, is far greater than the width. Frames should cover as much of the center of the face as possible in order to minimize the length.

OVAL FACE

The oval face is considered to be the ideal shape because of its balanced proportions. To keep the oval's natural balance, look for eyeglass frames that are as wide as (or wider than) the broadest part of the face, or walnut-shaped frames that are not too deep or too narrow. More frames look good with this face shape than any other, as long as the size of the frames is in proportion to the face. When picking a frame for an oval shaped face, try to keep your proportions: go with the frame that is as wide or wider then your face. Shape-wise, pretty much anything will look great.

DIAMOND

Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the eye line and jaw line, and cheekbones are often high and dramatic. This is the rarest face shape. To highlight the eyes and bring out the cheekbones, try frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines, or try rimless frames or oval and cat-eye shapes.

Have you noticed that small bell on some people’s bikes and wondered why it was there? It’s more than just decoration it has a specific function.

As we all know, life has many mysteries that have no apparent solutions. One of these is Evil Road Spirits. They are the little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride. Where'd the Seson go?

It's hard to believe that it's October already. This riding season has
just been shooting past. It seems that I've been especially busy this
year. Riding alone I've been get a bunch in. Most of the trips were
short, but had mileage. There were several 1000 mile weekends put in
this year.

I've spent a lot of time writing articles for the website and various
ezines. Several of them have been published and are widely available on
the web. The latest article is "Packing Up for a Long Motorcycle
Trip". I know it's kind of late in the season for that, but there's always

Packing Up for a long Motorcycle Trip

Weeks before I’m ready to leave on a long motorcycle trip, I start getting excited. Often I get to the point where I can think of anything else. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that I spend the time getting prepared for it. I usually put this off to the very end. I’ve learned however over the years that this means that my packing never matches what I will really need for the trip. Proof, last year I was in Sturgis with nothing more than a sweatshirt and leather vest riding around in 45 to 55 degree weather. DUMB MOVE.
Anyway, to try to avoid that I’ve started putting a list together of the stuff I need to pack for every trip and where I want to store it on the motorcycle. To help me build the list I put everything in categories to help keep it a little more organized. The categories I use are:

Things to keep the Motorcycle Rolling

Regardless of your mechanical skills, on long trips you will usually end up having to fix something on your motorcycle. It’s just the nature of motorcycles. At a bare minimum I always carry tire patch and CO2 cartridges to perform those road side tire problems and hope I don’t have far to go till the next motorcycle shop. If the shop is a fair distance away you should have tools that would allow you to remove the tire and hitch a ride. Since I ride a Harley Davidson (not balanced and not rubber-mounted) I always carry a complete set of wrenches, Torx, and Allen wrenches, along with a bottle of LocTite to tighten up those parts that think it would be better to end up on the side of the road. I also carry a small multi-tool that includes a small LED flashlight because it seems I always breakdown after dark. In my tool pouch you can almost (important word there) always find extra fuses, an extra sparkplug and extra light bulbs. And the two most important things, zip ties and electrical tape. After all with those you can fix just about anything that would keep you from making it down the road. I’ve found that for most brands of motorcycles you can find pre-packaged tool pouches that have a good set of tools lined up for you. Sometimes the quality of the tools may be questionable, but hey all they’re going to do is ride around in your saddlebags and they’ll do in a pinch.

Things to keep the Motorcycle Secure

If you plan your trips like me (NOT) you don’t always end up staying at the most reputable establishments. It’s always a good idea to lock your bike and have some way of locking the wheels. At least that way you’ll keep the lazy motorcycle thieves from getting away with your bike. I always carry two keys for every lock with me when I travel. There’s the ones that I carry in my pocket or attached to my belt, and the ones I carry deep in my bag for when I lose the other ones. As for disc lock I really recommend them. They are small, strong and provide a pretty good deterrent. They don’t however address the case where someone comes with a lift and just hauls your bike away. For that you need to carry a heavy duty cable or chain lock to tie your bike to a solid structure. I personally don’t like these due to the bulk and weight that they add to the saddlebags, but then I have pretty good insurance to replace the motorcycle if it’s stolen.

Things to keep the rider going

Taking care of the rider is every bit, if not more so, important as keeping the motorcycle going. When we are out there in the wind there are millions of things that affect our ability to be comfortable and safe. Some of these I’ve discussed in other articles. First and foremost we need to make sure that we are protected from the sun. Getting sunburned on your arms, hands and face can absolutely ruin a good day of riding. I carry a stick sunscreen that has a SPF-30 rating and is waterproof and dries instantly. I use it on any skin that I have exposed to the sun. In addition I always carry a lip balm. Chapped lips can be a very painful thing on the road.

Both sunburn and chapped lips can sneak up on you without you being aware of it. Other things that I pack are a first aid kit that includes bandages, pain reliever and antiseptic ointments. Injuries on the road can become infected very easy due to the road grim that we are constantly hit by.

Perhaps my most important piece of equipment is my cell phone. I always carry that with me and make sure that it’s always charged. Today, there is probably no piece of equipment that is more important than a cell phone in case of emergency. I usually carry a charger for use at night and a 12v car charger. Luckily I’ve installed a lighter on my motorcycle that allows me to charge my phone from the bike. This way I never have to worry about being stranded with a dead phone.

While I’m talking about phones, please make sure that you have I.C.E. number coded into your address book on the phone. I.C.E. numbers are the first thing that emergency workers will look for In Case of Emergency. Having these number(s) in your phone can greatly increase your chances of getting proper medical care. Two basic considerations for the numbers should be:

Make sure the numbers are current. It won’t do any good to have a number that is no longer valid specified as your ICE.
Make sure that the person that answers that call has some basic knowledge about your medical history. Things like known allergies, blood type and doctors’ name. By providing this basic information the emergency medical workers will be able to make much more informed decisions.

Protective clothing and gear (Riding Gear)

On long trips you are most likely going to hit every kind of conceivable weather. No matter how hot it may get in the middle of that sunny summer day, there’s probably some cold miserable weather waiting out there for you. If you’re in the middle of the desert you’re sure to run into some rain. After all you are on a motorcycle. To be prepared, I save all of the space in my saddlebags for riding gear. My usual list is:

My colors. Can’t ride a bike without those.

Leather Jacket preferably one that has a removable lining and good ventilation.

Chaps. Make sure they fit well and are in good condition.

Fingerless gloves and full fingered gloves

A couple of extra doo rags. I’m always losing those things.

Face mask of some sort. I’ve got a windshield on my bike and that protects me most of the time but in heavy rain, hail and the cold a neoprene face mask really helps.
Sunglasses and/or goggles. I personally like the convertible combos, which can change from sunglasses to goggles and have interchangeable lenses. My personal favorites are the SG-1 from WileyX.
Rain Suit. One of those cheap sets from Wally World won’t do. Sure they may keep you dry for awhile, but more often than not you’ll get 30 miles down the road and the suit will be flying behind you like streamers. Don’t skimp here.

If the weather is going to be extremely hot then a polymer crystal cooling bandanna is a great piece of gear to be carrying. I usually carry this in a small baggie that helps keep it fresh and keeps other things from getting wet from it when not in use.

Of course as has been said millions of times “Dressing in layers is the way to go”. Being able to add layers and take off layers can substantially add to your riding comfort. As far as clothing is concerned keep it to a minimum. Carry enough for a few days and plan wash stops into your trip. This will help keep your load manageable. The key is to pack for all the conditions you are likely to run into but keep the load as sparse as possible. Get creative and figure out multiple uses for different pieces of clothing and the best way to extend the wear-ability of the clothes. After all if you get caught in the rain without your rainsuit, those clothes are good for another day. Aren’t they?

Hygiene

Even a scummy old biker like me likes to clean up every once in awhile. And since I often alternate between camping and motels I carry things to wash up with. These would include a towel, washcloth and those little bars of soap and bottles of shampoo you can get at most motels. It helps that in my day job I travel all the time so I’ve got a life time supply of those.

I’m also trying to keep the last few remaining teeth that I have so that means I have to carry my toothbrush and toothpaste. Since I’ve got long hair I have to carry a brush to get the rat’s nest that forms in my hair every day out. Usually on long trips I don’t shave, but I always have a razor with me. I just use the soap to lather up on my face instead of carrying shaving cream.

One last item you should never leave without is toilet paper. There’s nothing worse than suddenly needing it when you’re out on the road and not having it. I usually start out with a small quantity which would take care of the duties a couple of times. If I end up using that up, I usually restock courtesy of the next gas stop or hotel.

All of this is carried in a small bag that I always have packed so I never have to worry about it. If I use something, I replace it and it’s a thoughtless act to throw that in the T-Bags.

Camping Equipment

Camping equipment is probably one of the hardest things to carry and pack on a motorcycle. This is based mostly on the fact that it usually bulky and doesn’t necessarily pack down real well. Even when they pack down the bags seem to be longer than you would want. They usually end up being to tall if you tie them on standing up, or to wide if you try to have them laying down.

For a tent, I’ve found that the small two man dome tents work best. They are easy to set up, have plenty of room to spread out in at night (if there’s only one person in it), and they pack down pretty nice. My tent originally came in a flimsy nylon bag that I knew would hold up to rolling down the road so I replaced the bag with a sturdier one. My tent is usually bungeed onto my T-Bag and additional one to attach it to the motorcycle.

On the other side of the T-Bag, I have my mattress. As the years have gone by that ground has gotten harder and harder. I use one of those self-inflating mattresses that blow themselves up. While they’re not the most comfortable, it sure beat sleeping on the ground. In the morning all you have to do is open the valve, roll it up and it’s ready to go. I got a bag to carry the mattress in too.

Miscellaneous Stuff

I’ve always found that carrying cameras on a motorcycle trip can be a pain. The old styles (film based) have a tendency to take up to much space. And the digital camera require to much accessory stuff, like chargers, place to download the pictures and such. For a while I was carrying Advantix cameras, since they can be relatively small and take good quality pictures. Now I’ve never been a fan of the panoramic views but that is available on them. I’m now carrying a digital camera and have bought several different memory cards for it. This way I can use the cards like regular film and don’t have to carry all the stuff to download the pictures until I get home.

Other important items are a wallet, credit cards and money. Can’t keep going without these. And the one thing that I consider the most important, a notebook and pens. When I’m on a trip it’s great to be able to keep notes about what you saw, how the motorcycle was running, where I stayed and interesting characters I meet along the way. It’s also important cause if you’re like me and suffer from CRAFT disease (write me if you want to know what that stands for) it’s a great way to refresh your memories of the trip years from now.

Now that the bike’s all loaded up one last thing to remember is that with all the additional weight of the stuff you’re carrying the motorcycle is likely to handle differently. Remember to try to keep the weight as low and as close to the center of the motorcycle as possible. This will help keep the front wheel from getting to light or making the motorcycle a little top heavy. Make sure everything is strapped on real well. Good straps and bungies will give you a good dose of peace of mind knowing that your load is secure.

Finally setting up a BLog

After all of this time I've finally decided to set up a BLog. I hope to use this as a place to keep my friends, bros and everyone else posted about what's going on at Bikerwares.

The last few months at Bikerwares have been both exciting and scary. It's been exciting because I have through the help of lots of people, been able to really get the site going. The traffic numbers have constantly been increasing since I opend up the site in March.

It's been scary because like most people, I didn't pay a lot of attention to what I was doing to get the site going. For example, without having the site really ready for prime time, I started an adwords campaign on Google. Well it got me traffic but almost no sales. I didn't have the products in place, I didn't have my SSL in place, I didn't have my content in place and I didn't have a plan. That was an expensive lesson, but I've gotten better now.

Today, at Bikerwares I really concentrate on some basic ideas. These are:

Make sure the customer is always satisfied with the products they are getting.
Make sure that Bikerwares provides the absolute best service to the customers.
Suprise the customers with specials offers and deals. Do things that they normally wouldn't expect from a website.
Use Bikerwares as a means to enhance the lives of customers, friends, bros and anyone else that comes into contact with Bikerwares.com.
Always provide the best products at the best possible price.
And most importantly Have Fun and Enjoy Life.

By having these guiding priniciples it's made it a lot easier to run the site. I work hard on making sure that visitors understand what they are looking at and that the information they are looking for is easily found. I don't try the hard sell. I tell it like it is about the products.

Building a website is much more than a technical task. It requires a heart and a soul to bring it to life.
